Approaching Right
Zenden took back his math mock examination paper. 77 out of 80, I was happy with his result. However, I was surprised when he told me his teacher wrote a short remark on his paper.
She wrote:
Good. Try to score full mark, Zenden!
This short sentence kept me pondering...is perfection that important? I understand from the teacher point of view, wanting to see her student excel in his work. But...on the other hand, how would a child react to this remark? I figured out two possibilities.
1) He will be encourage by her words because it reflects her confident in him getting full marks.
2) He will be disappointed, thinking he is not up to his teacher's standard.
Now, if a child falls under the first category, it is ok because he has got a positive mindset. I thank God that Zenden is in this category. The first question I asked him, "Why do you think the teacher gave such a remark on your paper?" His replied was," She knows I am good in my math and scoring full is not a problem."
I thank God for this reply because I know that he was not affected negatively by this remark but instead will be motivated to score better the next round. Nonetheless, I told him I am still please with his 77/80 score.
Again, if the child falls under the 2nd category. It's tragic. Not only will he be disappointed, he will start to feel that he will never be good enough in his studies or worst, in anything. This could thus led him to have no self-worth, no confident with himself in the future.
The bible teaches us that when God created us, He creates us in His own image. Why? because we are valuable in His eyes. We know about God perfect image and because we are created in His image, that means we share His characteristics. Knowing that God created us in His image provides us a solid basis for self-worth. When we know we are person of worth, it helps us to love God and make valuable contribution to those around us. Likewise, if that 'worth' is lost...can you imagine how the world will be like?
Like I said, being a teacher is never easy. Every word of yours is so important to a child. Don't get the wrong idea that I disagree with what the teacher did. I understand where she is coming from because I have know her for 2 years. She knows Zenden very well. What I am saying is just....using the right approach is very important because the ultimate result you get can be Good or Bad.
God bless~
